Marion J. Levy, Jr. (1918-2002) was the Musgrave Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University. His work on social theory, family structure, and modernization, especially in China and Japan, earned him many accolades, including grants from the Ford Foundation and the National Science Foundation. Levy graduated from Harvard University in 1939. His graduate studies in Economics (M.A., University of Texas, 1940) were interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a Japanese language and intelligence officer, having received training at the Naval Japanese Language School at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Levy earned his Master’s degree in Sociology from Harvard in 1943 and his Ph.D., also from Harvard, in 1947.
